Grrrr! Bloody
Windows 10 again! (I have version 1709).
This time it’s
“Quality Update” 2018-01 aka KB4056892.
2 newer AMD64
machines updated ok, but the 2 AMD Athlon 64’s hang up during the
reboot.
Failure codes are
0x800f0845 and 0x80070643.
Apparently, this
update is for Intel CPUs, so are nothing to do with AMDs at all.
It appears that in
their wisdom, Microsoft tested the fix on Intels, but never thought
to see what it would do to AMDs.
(Or possibly they
only test things on the latest model of anything).
Anyway, looking
online finds that a number of people are complaining about this, and
someone has come up with a temporary workaround.
There is a little
known Microsoft tool for hiding updates to be found at
To get there, you
need to reboot the machine 3 times, (if necessary switching it off
between times), which invokes a repair mode. It is supposed to either
fix it, or roll back the update. One machine rolled back, the other
didn’t, so It had to go back to the last restore point.
There is no sign of
version 1709 on the support page, so I chose the version for
“Anniversary Update” (1607)
You need to download
the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter, (which is called
wushowhide.cab) and open it, which causes it ro auto-run.
Then you cand select
hide updates, and it looks around a bit, and eventually comes up with
a list, and you can check the box for “2018-01………..(KB4056892)
and click next.
Check it says
2018-01……. is fixed with a green tick, close and restert
windows.
Eventually an update
check will show all is ok.
"Quality Update" indeed!
